Who are you calling weak?

Urinary incontinence in adult women is more common than you may think. Although it’s often associated with elderly adults and those with health challenges, it can affect anyone, at any stage of life.

Despite impacting 50% of adult women, urinary incontinence still carries a huge stigma in our society that makes women to feel isolated in their journeys. But it’s nothing to be embarrassed about. The symptom can affect even the strongest among us, including 3-time Olympic medalist Meaghan Benfeito.

Canadian diver Meaghan Benfeito has competed in four Olympic Games between the years 2008 and 2021. Now retired, she’s adjusting to her life as a new mom and a CrossFit coach.

In this documentary, we follow Meaghan as she goes about her day, from her morning at home with the family to her fitness routine at the gym. We also visit the pool she used to train at where we witness her first postpartum dive. As we go along, she talks to us about her journey as a sportsperson and everything she had to overcome to be able to commit to her sport, including embracing her incontinence.

For Meaghan, urinary incontinence is not something to shy away from, and hardly a sign of weakness. She talks about how it’s something she has experienced her entire diving career and is very common in sports. “I don’t understand why people are said to be weak when they have urinary leakage. Because for me, it’s normal,” she says, referring to how common it is among athletes.

She adds: “I’d say that there’s no one weak in life. Everyone has their strengths, everyone has their perseverance, everyone has their challenge. It’s the way you get through everything.”
