Meet Anne Abernathy

"Why not?"

That’s how Anne Abernathy has approached life and it is how she found the courage and Tenacity to become our first Tenacious woman. When she was growing up she had no idea she was to become a six-time Olympic luger and world record breaker. Read her inspiritional story in Anne's own words ...

“Step up, not back”

“When I was on a ski trip with a group of friends after college, I walked onto the luge track for the first time. A luge coach asked the 20 of us if we wanted to try it. Eighteen of the group stepped back while I stepped up and thought ‘why not?’  Soon after, luge became my passion and at 33 I went to my first Olympics with the U.S. Virgin Islands team.”

"Lugers typically retired from the sport at age 30, so many people told me to keep my age a secret. I held my ground and continued on with the sport. Five Olympics later, the German women’s luge team won gold, silver and bronze – all of them over the age of 30. By being Tenacious, I paved the way for others to follow suit."

Realizing my Tenacity

"In 2001, I crashed on the track. The head injury was so severe that I lost three years of memory and experienced  blackouts, seizures and impaired balance. These unpredictable issues made me even more determined to get back to living my life and get back on a luge.  Less than one year later I qualified for the Olympics."
