Keeping a record of bladder habits is a simple and practical method of obtaining information on your loved one’s voiding behavior. Many experts believe that the act of keeping a daily bladder diary is therapeutic and a type of “behavioral intervention” because, once you identify correlations between type of fluid intake and the urinary symptoms, the individual may decide to change their diet, causing symptoms to improve. It is not uncommon to hear comments from patients such as “I did not know I was drinking so much coffee” or “Look, I am always in the bathroom in the morning.”

A 3-day bladder diary can provide a good picture or snapshot overall for the time of each void and urine leakage episodes. Because fluid intake and the type of liquid consumed can be contributing factors to incontinence, by listing the daily intake and noting the type and the amount – these can help point to which factor may be causing the symptoms.
